Barney Baker, PE

President and Principal Engineer

Barney Baker founded Baker Design Consultants in 1996 after an international career with the firms of WA Fairhurst & Partners (Edinburgh, Scotland) and TY Lin International (Falmouth, Maine). As Principal Engineer, Barney personally supervises all of the firm’s projects with hands-on involvement from start to finish.

With over 30 years of experience as a Civil Engineer, Barney has expertise in the planning, permitting, design, and construction administration for new developments in addition to the repair of existing facilities. His portfolio of structural projects includes bridges, buildings, piers, marinas, boatyards, boat/barge ramps, sea walls, coastal walkways, and bulkheads. Barney also has extensive experience with projects that address stabilization and protection of the coastal shore with erosion control measures that include beach nourishment, plantings, and soft and hard armor revetment solutions.

Barney Baker is a licensed Professional Engineer in Maine, a Maine DOT certified Local Project Administrator, and an active participant in numerous organizations that represent Maine waterfront and islands.

Barney is an avid sailor with coastal and offshore experience on both sides of the Atlantic. At one time, he maintained a USCG 50 ton license. He cruises the Maine coast each summer on his 32-ft Sabre sloop.

Daniel Bannon, PE, CFM

Senior Project Engineer

Dan has over 10 years of experience in Project Management, Design, Planning, Permitting, Construction Administration, and Inspections related to Marine Structures, Bridges, Shore Access, and Waterfront Development, as well as commercial and residential structures.

A sampling of recently completed projects includes:

  • Condition assessment of coastal structures
  • Inspection, Design, Load Rating of municipal bridges
  • Reconstruction and rehabilitation design for marine piers
  • Design of bridge fenders for vessel impact
  • Civil site layout and masterplanning for waterfront access sites
  • Harbor management planning
  • Structural analysis for a variety of clients including architects, contractors, and suppliers of engineered structures

Dan’s background in structural analysis, experience with high performance materials (e.g., design and fabrication of FRP composites), attention to detail, and excellent presentation and communication skills allow him to bring unique and valuable insights to his projects.

Dan holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering and an M.S. in Structural Engineering from the University of Maine.  He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Maine, with past licenses in Vermont and Florida, an ASFPM Certified Floodplain Manager, a Maine DOT certified Local Project Administrator, and a participant in civil and structural engineering organizations in Maine.

Outside of engineering, Dan is an aspiring mandolin player, an avid runner, a proponent of local and natural food, and a father of two energetic young boys.

Chris Pickles, PE

Project Engineer

Chris Pickles is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Maine. Since starting his career as an engineer in 2007 Chris has worked in a wide variety of engineering disciplines including building construction, site development, hydrographic and land surveying, environmental remediation, facilities planning, and manufacturing.

Chris holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Wentworth Institute of Technology and an M.S. in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Texas. In 2015 Chris earned his M.B.A. from the University of Southern Maine with a focus on sustainability.

With his varied work experience and education Chris is enthusiastic to bring a robust knowledge of project management, cost estimating, environmental responsibility and design to each project he works on.

Chris is an adjunct professor at the University of Southern Maine and is the professional mentor for a student chapter of Engineers Without Boarders.

When not at work Chris enjoys traveling and being outdoors as much as possible. He loves surfing, hiking, and boating.

Morgan Clements, EI

Graduate Engineer

Morgan is a recent University of Maine School of Civil Engineering graduate with a focus in geotechnical engineering and hydrology. As a graduate engineer, Morgan assists with all types of projects and does much of the drafting work.

Morgan’s recent completion of studies at UMaine, ability to thrive in a team environment, and strong interest in marine and coastal engineering projects allow her to assist well with many projects at Baker Design Consultants.

Morgan holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Maine and is an Engineer Intern in the State of Maine. She has interned with TY Lin International as an Inspector General, and has worked as a Research Assistant on concrete strengths at the University of Maine.

Outside of engineering, Morgan has a passion for music, yoga, and animals, especially her beloved cat, Pookie.
